Relationships fill our lives, shaping us and defining us from the moment we are born. As infants our very survival depends on others and we learn quickly how to engage with those others, how to please them, and interact to get our needs met, whether positive or negative, it shapes all of our interaction style to follow.
Our parents, our siblings, our peers, grandparents, cousins, extended family, and eventually mentors, all are relationships that effect and influence our lives and identities.Often, as adults when we hear the word “relationship” we assume the speaker is referring to a romantic entanglement of some sort, but the truth is every type of relationship is important and relevant to our identities, and ultimately our well being. Learning safe, appropriate ways to communicate, interact, get our needs met, share and listen to others, and care for something outside of ourselves are all facets of becoming a healthy and whole person in modern life.
Learning to soften our hearts, steel our resolve, and allow ours elves to be vulnerable to another makes us better people no doubt, but exploring the possibilities of certain types of relationships with ridged boundaries, rules and goals helps us to accomplish much more than we could on our own.
This year we are exploring the ideas of Justice. Justice being based on reciprocal respect with in relationships.
